COOKIE MINING GAME SCIENCE MODULE

PURPOSE
Introduction to the economics of mining.

METHOD

  1. Each player starts with $19 of play money.
  2. They receive Cookie Mining sheet and grid paper.
  3. Each player must buy "mining property" which is a cookie.  Only one per player.
  4. Then the player traces the outline of the cookie purchased on the grid sheet.  Count each square, even partial ones, that fall inside the circle.
  5. Buy "Mining Equipment".  This may not be shared and they can purchase more than one.
  6. After the cookie has been "mined" or broken, the cookie is placed back in the circle on the grid paper.  This can only be done with mining tools -- no hands allowed.

The game provides each player an opportunity to make the most money that a player could make with the resources provided.

Decisions made by each player determine which properties to buy and which pieces of mining equipment should be purchased.

Each player should learn a simplified flow of an operating mine.  As well as learning something about the difficulty of reclamation especially in returning the cookie back to the exact size that it was before the "mining" started.
