HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS SCIENCE MODULE

PURPOSE
To show the effects on plants of the chemicals and foods we use and eat in the house.

NOTE:  A long term study (takes about a week).

MATERIALS
• Cheap small potted plants from the store
• A few household chemicals and foods

METHOD
Keeping each plant separate, add a couple of drops of each chemical to the plants, record how they do.  Make sure to label each plant with the contaminant used.

Scientific Method
Remember to keep one plant with nothing on it as a control. Treat all the plants the same for the rest of the experiment.

Try:

•  Ammonia cleaner
•  Bleach
•  Milk
•  Vinegar
•  Ketchup
•  Mustard
•  Salt
•  Orange Juice
•  Dish soap,  Hand soap

A few drops of each should do.

DISCUSSION
Do some help the plant to grow?  Why?  How long did each "contaminant" take to affect the plant?
