The J.R. Simplot Company is one of several groups in the Upper Blackfoot River Initiative for Conservation (UBRIC), which received a special award for its efforts in environmental protection and enhancement.
The Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry (IACI) gave its 2013 Environmental Excellence Award to the UBRIC at its annual conference held in June in Coeur d’Alene. The IACI praised the partnership for completing a watershed assessment and fish population study for the Upper Blackfoot River, and working with local irrigators to restore upstream fish passage and install fish screens at irrigation diversions, according to the news release.
THE UBRIC is a partnership comprised of Agrium/NuWest, Idaho Conservation League, the J.R. Simplot Company, Monsanto and Trout Unlimited.
"It’s exciting to work with landowners and other interested organizations to accomplish projects that improve water quality and habitat for trout," said Alan Prouty, vice president for sustainability and regulatory affairs.
Brad Smith, who works with the Idaho Conservation League, said the organizations are able to accomplish much more working together than they could on their own.
“Restoring the health of the Blackfoot River unites us in a common purpose; one that benefits the local community and fish and wildlife," he said.
