Simplot Fertilizer, Potato Plants Recognized for Efficiency Achievements

May 05, 2023

Wise energy use is one way Simplot shows its Respect for Resources and commitment to business sustainability and the health of the planet. Energy efficiency actions are an integral part of our Company, and these efforts were recognized when two of our fertilizer plants earned the prestigious 2022 ENERGY STAR® certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Our Portage la Prairie Potato Processing Facility in Manitoba was also recognized by ENERGY STAR, receiving Industry Certification for 2022 by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Government of Canada.

The ENERGY STAR certification recognizes Simplot’s Helm, California plant and our Rock Springs, Wyoming plant as among the most energy-efficient nitrogenous fertilizer manufacturing facilities in the country. Helm and Rock Springs produce fertilizer and its components – critical inputs to ensure healthy crops that help feed the world.

Helm was previously recognized by ENERGY STAR in 2019, 2020 and 2021; this is Rock Springs’ second ENERGY STAR award. The designation is based on the plants’ rank in the top 25% on EPA’s Energy Star energy performance scale in their industry nationwide. This measure is a statistical model that scores a facility’s production and energy use to benchmark its energy performance against the industry. In 2022, only 86 plants in all categories were awarded this certification.

In Canada, NRCan ENERGY STAR certification for Frozen Fried Potato became available in 2019, and Portage is the only frozen fried potato plant in Canada to earn the certification. Portage earned NRCan Energy Star certification in 2019, 2020, and 2022. Plant expansion startup affected certification in 2021.

“The EPA’s Energy Star certification is reserved for a very select group of manufacturing facilities,” Simplot Energy Engineer David Albright pointed out. “For Simplot to have three plants achieve this designation is a testament to our company’s dedication to energy efficiency. Congratulations to the teams at each of these facilities that earned this incredible achievement!”

Since 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners like Simplot have helped businesses make their processes more energy efficient, saving more than $500 billion in energy costs and achieving 4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions. Thanks to their superior energy performance over 2022, the 86 ENERGY STAR certified plants, including Helm and Rock Springs, avoided nearly 105 trillion BTUs of energy consumption, and prevented emissions equal to the annual energy use of nearly 1.1 million American homes.
