Simplot’s Vernal Mine has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to safety, earning two prestigious awards from the Utah Mining Association (UMA).
The awards were presented at UMA’s annual awards program on March 28, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah. This event celebrates the achievements of UMA members – like Simplot – and the companies and individuals who support Utah Mining.

Innovation in Safety Award
The Vernal Mine was honored with the Innovation in Safety Award for its collaboration with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to perform a realignment of US Highway 191, a major road that runs through Simplot’s private mining property.
“This project is a win for everyone involved – the community, the state, and our Company,” said Vernal Mine Manager Jared Jackson. “It demonstrates what can happen when we work collaboratively to find innovative solutions to improve safety.”
This stretch of highway, part of the Flaming Gorge–Uintas National Scenic Byway, has long been known for its steep grades and dangerous switchbacks. Between 2010 and 2021, the area saw multiple serious crashes, including a fatal truck rollover. Working in close partnership with UDOT, the Simplot team helped plan and support a new route that eliminates the switchbacks, improves traffic flow, and includes enhanced safety features like turning lanes, passing lanes, and an emergency runaway truck ramp. Outstanding Safety Performance Award
The outstanding safety performance award recognizes companies with minimal reportable injuries in proportion to hours worked. Vernal’s record – just two minor reportable injuries in all of 2024 (a sprained ankle and a cracked tooth) – places them among a group of just 31 recipients this year.
Simplot Senior Director of Health Safety & Security Alicia Duke expressed her pride in the Vernal team’s achievement, saying, “Receiving the outstanding safety performance award is a significant accomplishment. It reflects the culture of safety the team has built at Vernal, where safety is a part of every conversation and every shift. Well done, team!”
Please join us in congratulating the entire Vernal Mine team! These awards are a testament to their continued commitment to safety.
